I verified and added a subdomain and added a CNAME pointed at the 365 public site. When I went to change the domain in the SP admin, the site immediately showed "deleted" and can no longer be accessed in the site collection interface. The site is still working fine [for now...] as you can see:
Why doesn't MSFT follow standard practices for hosting web sites and what does "deleted" mean?
