POPed email marked as read

I am having the same problem as outlined here: http://community.office365.com/en-us/forums/158/t/86237.aspx?acheck=1 but for a different reason. I connect to Outlook 365 on my smart phone using POP because the exchange interface requires 'wipe' privileges, which I am not willing to grant on my personal property. Once an email is automatically downloaded to my smart phone via POP it is marked as read in Outlook 2010. Hence I often do not notice that a new email has arrived in Outlook, which in turn is setup to receive from multiple email accounts. Is there any work around for this behavior that does not involve using the exchange interface? Thanks
